Sycamore Dining has been preparing and serving meals for older people every weekday, Monday to Friday, for nearly 10 years. It is a much-valued service that brings people together, supports local communities, and gives volunteers and Scouts a rewarding way to make a real difference. Meals are provided for lunch clubs, mainly in independent living centres across the City, Broxtowe and Ruddington.
Volunteer roles available
There are several friendly and practical ways to get involved. Volunteers can help in the kitchen, preparing meals, or support as driver/servers, delivering and serving meals at community venues. We ask volunteers to give just one day a week, though they are very welcome to do more if they would like to.
Driver/server volunteers
We would be delighted to hear from driver/server volunteers who can help on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays. The role involves collecting meals from our kitchen between 11.15am and 11.30am, taking them to the venue, and serving lunch at 12pm to a small group of between 8 and 20 older people. After the meal, volunteers return to the kitchen and should be finished by 1.30pm.
Cook vacancy
We also have a cook vacancy on Mondays, starting on 1 January. This role involves starting between 8.45am and 9.00am, preparing and cooking the same meal for up to 60 people, and finishing by 1.45pm. To help the new cook feel confident and supported, we suggest starting at the beginning of December to allow time for a handover.
Kitchen assistants
Kitchen assistant roles are also available on some weekdays, offering another helpful way to be part of the team.
If you would like to find out more or volunteer for any of these roles, please email chris.flewitt@notts-scouts.org.uk. The positions are based at Foxton Gardens, NG8 3FR, and full training will be provided.
